Frangokastello, apart from the main beach of Kastro, has to the east the Orthi Ammos and Kritamas, while to the west, Illinga, Chrotro Volaka, Mavro Nero and Vatalo. Other nearby beaches at Fragokastello are Lakki, Agia Marina, Peristeres, Korakas and Kouthelos. It is worth visiting these…
In Hora Sfakion, Filaki, Vrissi and Illinga, are beaches accessible by road, while Glyka Nera, the Timios Stavros, Phoinikas, Likos, Marmara, St. Paul and Domata are connected only by boat or the E4 trail which starts from Chora Sfakion and passes through all these bays. From the harbor of Chora Sfakion also start the boats of ANENDYK, and not only, for Loutro, Agia Roumeli, Paleochora and Gavdos.
We highly recommend you to visit Gavdos, the southernmost tip of Europe! The island of Calypso, as mentioned by Homer in the Odyssey, is 22 nautical miles from Chora Sfakion. Some of the beautiful beaches of the island are Karave, Korfos, Trypiti, Sarakiniko, Agiannis, Lavrakas, Pirgos and Potamos.
In the province of Sfakia, specifically in Agia Roumeli, the gorge of Samaria, which is the largest gorge in Europe, ends, as its length reaches 16 km! It became a National Park due to the rich flora and fauna but mainly as a refuge for the rare Cretan goat (kri-kri), which lives here.
There are also other known, smaller, but beautiful, unique gorges, such as Aradena Gorge, Imbros Gorge, Asfendos and Kallikrates. And others, less known, such as those of Eligia, Illinga, Kapni, Sfagofarago and Manika. The most adventurous walkers can visit Anopolis Sfakion, a mountainous village in the province, and then continue walking to Pachnes, the highest peak of the White Mountains, at 2,456 meters!
The foothills of the White Mountains on the one hand and the many beaches of the Libyan Sea on the other hand offer you a variety of activities. Where the weather is mild during most days of the year, you can choose a trip to match your mood!
Walking, cycling, mountaineering, crossing the canyons and the well-known E4 are the alternatives for mountain lovers. Even driving to the mountainous villages of the province is interesting, although in some cases the road network is not so welcoming.
On the days you will spend your time near the sea apart from swimming, diving, fishing and various beach sports, you can start a beautiful walk along the village’s seas or relax late on the sun loungers of the beach and admire the magnificent sunset, the full moon or the magical Milkyway Galaxy in Frangokastello!
Ideal choices for day trips are Glyka Nera, Loutro, Phinikas, Likos, Marmara, Agios Pavlos, Agia Roumeli and Domata.
